Grenades, AK-47s among weapons seized at Hidalgo bridge
BROWNSVILLE — Federal inspectors seized a weapons cache that included grenades, assault rifles, handguns and ammunition from a sport utility vehicle crossing the Hidalgo-Reynosa International Bridge toward Mexico, Customs and Border Protection said Friday.
Hidalgo/Pharr CBP port director Hector Mancha said Wednesday’s seizure was their first recorded instance of frontline officers seizing grenades.
The driver of the 1999 Chevrolet Tahoe, a 48-year-old man from Reynosa, Tamaulipas, was turned over to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement-Homeland Security Investigations and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives for further investigation.
